The active geothermal area “Wai-O-Tapu” close to Rotorua, New Zealand, fascinates with its colorful springs, lakes and craters. The Champagne Pool is a hot spring that really bubbles like champagne (caused in this case by carbon dioxide*). Many minerals particularly antimony lead to the red ring around the spring*.

The overflow of the “Champagne Pool” creates a lake called “Artists Pallette”. Interestingly the colors change with the light changing – I was lucky enough to get some nice yellow and orange.

The Roto Karikitea crater is also filled with excess water from the Champage Pool. The toxic yellow-green color it had when I took the photo is actually a good representation of the extreme acidity of the water.*
