Only 68 years old: The Capelinhos Volcano

The Azores lie on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American Plate meets the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate. Hence the Azores are a volcanic active zone. In 1957 a massive erruption created an extension on the western side of Faial island. As Faial is located on the Eurasian Plate this volcano is considered the most western point of Europe, i.e. of the Eurasian Plate.

The erruption took over one year and created an amazing structure.

The Caldeira do Faial belongs to the same volcanic system but is located right in the middle of the island. It is the summit of the island, about 1’000 years old and 2 km in diameter. This shot really needed a wide angle lense – I used 18 mm focal length of my Canon RF 14-35 mm F4 L IS USM.
