Between Lisbon and New York, more-or-less in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, nine volcanic islands form the Azores. And wherever there are volcanos there are craters and often crater lakes. In this post I’d like to feature some optical illusions from a couple of crater lakes, like Caldeira Negra and Caldeira Comprida on Flores island.
In close proximity on Flores one can find a series of crater lakes with different colors. The two in the picutre above are even next to each other.

Caldeira Funda is an explosion crater of max 35m depth. It’s a geosite of the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark. Sunlight and weather on that day let the water shine in yellow-green and created in combination with the formation of the clouds a dramatic atmosphere.
Sete Ciades on São Miguel, is a really special place and the coulds are often stuck there. Here again is a blue and a green lake in a large caldera.

Also fascinating are the pictures of crater lakes with the sea in the back, like Caldeira Branca on Flores and Lagoa do Fogo on São Miguel.
