King of the Alps

The Upper Engadine is home to one of the largest Ibex herds in the Alps. In May they usually descend into the valley to feast on the green meadows. They are the perfect examples of resilience and adaptabililty. They survive the cold Alpine winters and live on steep, rugged slopes without falling.

Over generations they have learned that humans don’t do harm to them when enjoying the fresh green on the meadows right behind Pontresina. A great opportunity to get some great pictures, although a long focal lense is still needed.

Maybe a few more comments to the technology used for these pictures: I used the Canon RF 100-500 F4.5-7.1 L IS USM partly plus the Extender RF 1.4x. So I could reach up to 700 mm focal length. As I did not use a tripod I selected ISOs between 640 and 1000 to get to an exposure time of 1/500 to 1/1250 with an aperture between 8 and 13. This works usually well (as long as there is no wind) due to the stabilizers in the lens and in the body (R5). I am deeply impressed on the limited noise at this sensitivity, btw. The picutres presented are not corrected for any noise (but reduced in size for the purpose of the upload to the website).
