Finally we are reaching the most dominant and also highest mountain of the Alps: The Mont Blanc (Dominance 2’812 km – Height 4’810 m). It is located in the French Alps and belongs to the so called Graian Alps. The shot above and the one below show the north-west side.

The Piz Bernina (Dominance 138 km – Height 4’049 m) is my favorite mountain and the second most dominant of the Alps. It is located in the canton Graubünden and from the top 10 dominant mountains of the Alps the most eastern. It is actually the only mountain of the eastern Alps reaching 4’000 m.

Now we are getting to the top 3 most dominant mountains of the Alps: The Barre des Écrins (Dominance 107 km – Height 4’102 m) is the third most dominant and from the top 10 the most southerly peak. It is located in France and belongs to the Dauphiné Alps.

The Dufourspitze (Dominance 78 km – Height 4’634 m) in the canton Valais is the highest summit in Switzerland and belongs to the Monte-Rosa-Massif which is located along the Swiss-Italian border. (This is why the Dom is the highest mountain entirely on Swiss territory.)

Welcome back to my posts about the most dominant mountains of the Alps: The Finsteraarhorn (Dominance 52 km – Height 4’274 m) is the highest mountain of the Bernese Alps and one of my favorite mountains (next to the Piz Bernina which I will feature in a later post …). It looks like a shark fin and given its dominance one can see if from various sides.

Continuing my series about the most dominant mountains of the Alps: The Combin de Grafeneire (Dominance 26.5 km – Height 4’314 m) is a very special mountain looking like a crown. The plateau with various summits is covered by ice and snow all year. The 10 km long glacier coming down to the north is called Corbassière Glacier.

The Dom (Dominance 17 km – Height 4’545 m) is the highest mountain that is completely located in Switzerland. It belongs to the so called Michabel-Group (canton Valais), the 2nd highest mountain range in Switzerland.
