King penguins are the second largest pinguins in the world. The subspecies “Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus” is found in the south atlantic only. They live 25 years on average, weigh 10-12 kg and get around 1 meter tall.

Here I’m sharing shots from Tierra del Fuego in the south of Chile. The Colony is located at the strait of Magellan on Tierra del Fuego.

While the adults carry the beautiful orange color the chicks are covered with brown down only.

Tierra del Fuego is a fairly windy place! So forget the tripod to take a shot with a nice long lens … These shots are “handmade”: I used the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports at 600mm on a Canon EOS 5 DSR. I chose a 1/1250s, f/6.3, ISO 320 to get a sharp shot.
