Caves, cracks and tunnels offer a look inside the biggest glacier in Europe – the Vatnajökull Glacier located in the southeast of Iceland. All pictures have been taken at the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier, one of the tongues of Vatnajökull, above the Blue Diamond Tunnel.

The Icelandic guides that help you get on the glacier named the various spots creatively.

The range of colors is magnificent: Blue ice, green ice as well as black ice – i.e. ice with ash inside – turning golden if touched by sunlight.

Another ice cave that I visited only two years ago, the Black Diamond Icecave, does not exist anymore. The speed with which this glacier is melting is breathtaking.
